International Church of Barcelona

From the time I found out that I would be spending a semester in Barcelona I knew that I wanted to attend a church while here. This past sunday I visited the International Church of Barcelona. I want to be honest and say that I've been a little skeptical about this church. I learned of it a few months ago, but didn't really want to try it out. Basically, I'm a snob about church a lot of the time (I'm working on that!) However, this is the only church I have found in Barcelona with services in English.

My roommate decided to go with me (praise and prayer are requested! :)), so we got up and attended the 10 AM service. We walked in to smiles and warm welcomes... so far so good! After talking to a few people, the service started. (Mom, we had to stand up and introduce ourselves like in the Swiss church.) It was SO good to be in the company of believers again! Because it was the early service (and the Spanish don't do many things early... or on time, for that matter) there were only about 30-35 people there. Everyone seemed very sincere, and I think they have a fairly active college/career group.

I'm going to visit another church (with services in Catalan/Spanish), but I think that I will end up attending this church. I know that it would be excellent to attend a church that is more "solid," but that isn't beneficial if I can't even speak the language. Also, there's no guarantee that the people attending the church will speak English. At least this way there will be some other students like me, and I'll be able to have a little "English" haven here in Barcelona. Please join me in praying that I will be used for service in this church and that I will find Christian fellowship here.

Hi Caroline! I randomly came across your blog when looking up details for Int. Church of Barcelona because I'm planning on checking it out tomorrow. But also, a friend of mine who was here in Barcelona went to St. George's Episcopal, an English speaking church, and he recommended it. I haven't been to either, so I don't really know what they're like, but if you're looking for an English speaking church, you might want to give it a try!

Hi Caroline! Indeed, I echo your desire to find a church where God can use me to serve, and where I can experience Christian fellowship. My family and I (we are from Singapore) will be in Barcelona next Feb, and I was wondering if you have settled down on this church and if so, would appreciate if you could share more about your experience. Muchas gracias!

Hi,

I plan to move to Barcelona in Summer 09 after I graduate college and have been doing some research on churches to possibly attend once I move there. I first found the ICB website and then saw your blog. I would love to hear more on your experience with the church and members, as well as get more advice on moving to Barcelona from the US and tips on living there. Please email me if you get the chance. jrb0283@yahoo.com

Thank you and good luck with the rest of your time there!

I have just been offered an amazing job in Barcelona and the first thing i thought was "Eeeek - it's a Catholic dominated country!"
Doing some research on the net though i came across your blog as well as the ICB and St. Georges sites so i intend to check both of them out when i get there!

Any additional info you could give would be most appreciated.

Warm regards

Hi Caroline! I just came across your blog as looking for an English speaking church. I am thinking about going there next weekend to check it out. I live here in Barcelona for over a year and have not yet found a church. I do feel really empty and lacking fellowship. Normally I get my spiritual food out of the Internet..:) this I've been doing it for a couple of years. So maybe will meet there!

Hey Caroline, I'm currently studying abroad, and it hopes of gaining insight into the culture of Spain, I chose to take a course of the religions in Spain. I was doing my report on the International Church of Barcelona, but wasn't able to get in contact with some of the members because of my own travels in Europe as well as some of the pastors' travels. I was wondering what you thought of it all and attending this church. Did you eventually get to attend another english speaking church or any other church during your time in Barcelona? How did they compare?

I went to the ICB while I was there,i found these churches similar to my home churches and I felt there were a lot of things for college age and it was 3 blocks from my house. I also felt it was easier to be involved because I could just walk to anyplace they were having bible studies

Hi Caroline! I am currently on the World Race (www.worldrace.org). I came across your blog while researching churches in Barcelona. I will be in Spain next month and would love some suggestions of ways for missionaries to serve in Barcelona specifiically. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping me. Thank you!!!!
